Special rates apply to the unearned income of a minor, who is under the age of 18. The first $416 is tax free. 66% tax applies to the income amount in excess of $416 up to $1307. 45% tax applies to any amount in excess of $1307. Nonetheless, minors are eligible for the Low Income Tax Offset.

If your total taxable income is below $30,000, you may be eligible for the Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) of $1,350, which will be scaled back 4 cents for every dollar above $30,000 and no tax rebate will be available when taxable income reaches $63,750. This effectively raises the tax-free threshold to $15,000 for low income earners.
